Product Design

Product design is not about making objects, but about shaping how objects connect with people.

How We Do It

What is most important in product design is not merely manufacturing objects, but the perspective of what kind of relationship to build with users through these objects.

Product users are diverse, ranging from core users with extensive knowledge and experience in the field to potential users who are not yet familiar with this world. While it is essential to gain resonance and trust from core users through sophisticated design and high functionality, it is equally important to attract potential users with appealing concepts that make them want to pick up the product and product experiences that serve as an entry point to a new world.

Therefore, at RIDS, while working as professional designers who create highly refined products through meticulous prototyping, we also value creating products that we ourselves genuinely find appealing, maintaining the curiosity and enthusiasm of beginner users.

Furthermore, consideration for sustainability is indispensable in today's product design. We take into account both circular economy principles and manufacturing processes that minimize environmental impact, supporting the creation of sustainable products from both design and production perspectives.

Design Process

RIDS Design Process

1: Research

Duration: Approximately 1 month

Through in-depth observation of users and the market, grasp issues, needs, and latent demands, exploring the possibilities of the product.

Scope of Work: User Research (Interviews/Observation/Behavioral Analysis) / Market Analysis / Workshops

2: Concept

Duration: Approximately 1 month

Based on research analysis results, set the ideal state and hypotheses for the brand and business, designing product concepts and SKU (product lineup). Clarify medium-to-long-term brand and business direction, organizing and structuring them into proposals and strategic documents.

Scope of Work: Concept Development / Target Setting / Positioning Map / Product Vision Statement Creation

3: Design

Duration: 2–4 months

Determine the specific shape and specifications of the product, and after clarifying the design direction, collaborate with manufacturing partners to create prototypes. Refine through repeated prototyping from first to second and third iterations, improving completeness through tangible trial and error.

Scope of Work: Sketching / 3D Modeling / Material & Color Selection / Prototype Production

4: Manufacturing Support

Duration: 2–3 months

While implementing production design that assumes mass production and distribution, concretely integrate sustainable manufacturing processes and environmental considerations.

Scope of Work: Manufacturing Process Design (Material & Method Research) / Collaboration with Manufacturers & Producers / Supply Chain Design
